The Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) on Tuesday dismissed as untrue media reports saying that some of the party branches were preparing an emergency convention to remove Darinko Kosor from the office of HSLS president.

The HSLS issued a statement describing such reports as "lies and disinformation" spread by former party members wanting to tarnish the reputation of the party and its president.

According to media reports, some HSLS members are pushing for an emergency convention where they would demand that Darinko Kosor step down. The plan is reportedly backed by the party's branches in Zadar, Lika, Istria and Varazdin counties.

"None of those counties has ever demanded any emergency convention. On the contrary, they have been among the strongest in supporting the views of the bodies and president of the party," the statement said.

The HSLS said that those party organisations fully supported the decision by the party's presidency and governing council of July 10 to leave the ruling coalition.

The HSLS also dismissed as "utter nonsense" speculations that Darinko Kosor's victory in a party election in mid-November 2009 had been rigged.
