According to preliminary incomplete results of Sunday's parliamentary election, released at midnight by the State Election Commission (DIP), the centre-left coalition led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has won a majority of votes in seven constituencies, while the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and its coalition partners the Croatian Civic Party (HGS) and the Democratic Centre (DC) have won the most votes in three constituencies and in the constituency designed for Croatians living outside Croatia.
By Sunday midnight, DIP had processed 56.55 percent of votes in 11 constituencies, DIP president Branko Hrvatin said.
In Constituency No. 1, the SDP-led coalition, which also includes the Croatian People's Party (HNS), the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) and the Croatian Pensioners' Party (HSU), has won 45.47 percent of the vote. It is followed by the HDZ with 18.58 percent, and the Labour Party with 7.65 percent of the vote. Votes from 41.77 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been counted.
In Constituency No. 2, the SDP-led coalition has won 44.6 percent of votes, the HDZ has won 20.65 percent and the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) 6.86 percent. Votes from 67.93 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been counted.
The centre-left coalition has won the most votes also in Constituency No. 3, 53.19 percent. The HDZ has won 15.12 percent and the Labour Party 10.09 percent of the vote. Votes from 73.74 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been counted.
In Constituency No. 4, the SDP-led coalition has won 32.84 percent of the vote, the HDZ has won 23.21 percent and the Croatian Democratic Alliance of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) 21.9 percent. Votes from 66.94 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been counted.
In Constituency No. 5, the election winner is the HDZ with 32.92 percent of votes, followed by the SDP-led coalition with 31.8 percent, and the HDSSB with 11.83 percent. Votes from 65.62 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been counted.
In Constituency No. 6, the SDP-led coalition has won 41.53 percent of the vote, the HDZ/DC(Democratic Centre) coalition has won 22.09 percent and the Labour Party 5.92 percent. Returns from 53.33 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been processed.
In Constituency No. 7, the SDP-led coalition has secured 40.77 percent of the vote, the HDZ is second with 23.1 percent and the coalition of the HSS, the Green Party and the Pensioners' Party (SP) is third with 6.25 percent of the vote. Returns from 64.11 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been processed.
The centre-left coalition has achieved the best overall result in Constituency No. 8, with 57.59 percent of votes, the HDZ has won 11.95 percent, the Labour Party 5.45 percent and the Ladonja party 5.27 percent. Returns from 55.12 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been processed.
In Constituency No. 9, the HDZ/HGS coalition has won 38.77 percent of the vote, followed by the SDP-led coalition with 27.95 percent, and the Independent List of retired Catholic priest Ivan Grubisic with 4.92 percent. Votes from 46.18 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been counted.
In Constituency No. 10, the HDZ/HGS coalition has won 33.11 percent of the vote, followed by the SDP-led coalition with 32.14 percent, Grubisic's list with 10.85 percent, and the right-wing alliance led by Ruza Tomasic, president of the HSP Dr Ante Starcevic party, with 5.58 percent. Returns from 53.9 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been processed.
In Constituency No. 11, which is designed for the diaspora, the HDZ has won 70.24 percent of votes and the HSP 10.13 percent. Returns from 62.1 percent of polling stations in that constituency have been processed.
In Constituency No. 12, which is designed for ethnic minorities, the Serb national minority in the new parliament will be represented by Milorad Pupovac, Vojislav Stanimirovic and Jovo Vukovic.
The Hungarian minority will be represented by Robert Jankovics, the Italian by Furio Radin, and the Czech and Slovak minorities by Vladimir Bilek. Zeljko Balog will be representing the Austrian, Bulgarian, German, Polish, Roma, Romanian and Ruthenian minorities, while Ermina Lekaj Prljaskaj will represent the Albanian, Bosniak, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Slovenian minorities.
DIP chair Hrvatin said the election process was conducted in an orderly fashion, with minimum incidents.
More than 70,000 people sat on voter committees.
For now, DIP has no information that elections should be repeated at any of the polling stations.
Hrvatin said that DIP would not hold a news conference on Monday as had been the case in previous elections, but would issue a statement in writing.
"A brief news conference will possibly be held when the election results are final," said Hrvatin.
