Ex-prime minister Ivo Sanader will be extradited to Croatia most probably next week, one of Sanader's Zagreb-based attorneys, Goran Suic, told reporters on Friday.
"Our client will be extradited next week, but we still don't know the exact day," Suic told press after his three-hour visit to Sanader in Salzburg detention unit earlier today.
The Croatian anti-corruption agency USKOK suspects the former PM of abuse of office and bribe-taking.
The lawyer said he heard that news crews were already camping outside the Zagreb Remetinec detention unit, reiterating that Sanader would not be extradited today or this weekend.
Suic said Sanader's transportation to Croatia had not yet been arranged.
After the extradition, Sanader will be transported to the Remetinec detention unit as an investigation judge had set a month-long detention for him. After that, Sanader will be taken to the USKOK office which has been investigating him for the past seven months.
The Croatian Interior Ministry also declined to reveal the exact day of Sanader's transfer, saying that this information was classified. The Austrian side was also unavailable for comment, saying only that this was Croatia's internal matter.
Sanader has been in the Salzburg detention for the past seven months. Although he opposed his extradition to Croatia at the beginning, claiming he would not stand a fair trial in his homeland, the former PM recently changed his position and agreed with a fast-track extradition procedure.
