Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb wartime military commander wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on genocide charges, arrived at the detention centre of the Hague-based ICTY on Tuesday evening, the spokeswoman for the UN tribunal Nerma Jelacic said this evening.
The spokeswoman said that she could confirm that Mladic had been today transferred to the tribunal’s custody, after having been on the run for almost 16 years.
She said that this was a great event for the tribunal.
Mladic is expected to have the initial appearance before the tribunal in the few coming days.
A date of the commencement of his trial will be later announced.
Upon his arrival in the Scheveningen detention centre, Mladic will be provided with a copy of his indictment and he will be later examined by the tribunal's medical team.
Serbia extradited him earlier on Tuesday after it arrested him last Thursday.
Mladic is charged with genocide and other serious war crimes his troops committed in the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
