Serbia's leading opposition politician, Tomislav Nikolic, collapsed and was admitted to hospital late on Sunday, a day after he started a hunger strike to try and force early elections in the country.

Dr Jovan Maric said on Monday Nikolic's condition was stable.

Nikolic, Progressive Party leader, stopped taking food and liquid on Saturday in a bid to make President Boris Tadic set an election date.

Tadic visited Nikolic in his office in parliament on Sunday and asked him to end the hunger strike.
