Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president Tomislav Karamarko said in Split on Saturday he disagreed with an initiative by the David civic association for human rights protection to tax Church property, describing the initiative as unnecessary "acting out".

"We have the concordat with the Vatican and now there are various initiatives which aren't welcome at this moment," he said when asked by the press to comment on David's initiative to collect signatures for taxing Church property.

Karamarko said the Church was a factor of stability in society. "The Church brings people together and deserves credit for Croatia's history and I think that this acting out is unnecessary."
