The ambassador also emphasised the close cooperation with former PM Kosor and Prosecutor Bajic in strengthening the rule of law during his three-year term in Zagreb. He said the results in that sector were an important criterion for the completion of Croatia's accession negotiations with the European Union.

I would like to thank former Prime Minister Kosor on cooperation and congratulate on her government's historic achievements, notably the conclusion of the negotiations with the EU and the fight against corruption, Ambassador Foley said at the reception which was attended by incumbent and former state officials, including Jadranka Kosor.

Foley said that when it came to the anti-corruption drive, Croatia can "export" its experience to its neighbours.

We do not need to assist Croatia, and we now work on the transfer of Croatia's experience and on strengthening the judiciary of the neighbouring countries, said Foley who has been in the ambassadorial position in Zagreb since September 2009.

He also praised President Josipovic for his role of statesman in the country and in the region.

It is no secret that my country admires you as a statesman here in Croatia and in a wider region, the U.S. diplomat said.

President Josipovic said that the relations between Zagreb and Washington had considerably been upgraded during Foley's term in Zagreb, adding that Foley would remain a permanent friend of Croatia.

The Croatian president also pointed out the excellent military relations between the two countries, notably their cooperation in Afghanistan.

Josipovic decorated the outgoing U.S. ambassador for his contribution to the development of the Croatia-U.S. relations.
