Varazdin Mayor and independent MP Ivan Cehok, whom parliament stripped of immunity from prosecution on Thursday, left the Varazdin City Hall around 5.30 pm and was driven by the police to Zagreb.
Before leaving, Cehok told the press he had not been arrested, but according to unofficial reports, he will spend the night in custody and be interviewed by the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) in the morning.
Police entered Cehok's house this morning and escorted him out around 11.30 am, after the parliamentary Credentials and Privileges Commission granted USKOK's motion that he be stripped of immunity from prosecution.
Parliament approved the motion this afternoon. USKOK asked that his immunity be lifted so that he could be arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit crimes and three counts of abuse of office.
Upon leaving his house, Cehok said these matters had already been investigated.
According to unofficial reports, Cehok is under investigation for allegedly enabling the Vis company from Varazdin to acquire a monopoly on waste management in the northern Croatian town at the expense of the local utility company Varkom.
He is also allegedly under investigation over irregularities relating to an exchange of land near the Varazdin cemetery and for deals relating to a waste management project.
