The issue of missing persons is the most important political and humane issue for Croatia at the moment, President Ivo Josipovic said at a meeting with Serbia's First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, thanking Serbia for its assistance in locating a mass gave site in Sotin on the outskirts of the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar which contained the remains of 13 Croatian civilian victims who went missing after Vukovar had fallen into the hands of Serb rebels and the then Yugoslav People's Army in 1991.
A press release from the President's Office says that President Josipovic expressed hope that steps would be taken to shed light on the fate of all missing Croatian citizens while Minister Vucic promised to continue cooperation and announced the Serbian government's continuing efforts in that regard.
The two spoke about the European future of the region, possibilities of bilateral cooperation, particularly with regard to the economy, and outstanding issues between the two countries.
They agreed that new opportunities for economic cooperation should be utilised. Vucic offered his country's assistance in negotiating bilateral agreements with Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) countries in an effort to buffer any possible repercussions for Croatia due to its departure from this trade association once it joins the European Union (EU).
Vucic underscored Serbia's openness to Croatian investments. There was talk of cooperation in defence, particularly of joint ventures by the two countries' defence industries on third markets.
President Josipovic reiterated Croatia's support for Serbia and other countries in the region on the road toward the EU.
The meeting with the Croatian president was the last in a series of meetings with Croatia's highest officials that Minister Vucic had conducted during his two-day official visit to Croatia. Earlier in the day he met with Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusic, Deputy Prime Minister and future European Commissioner Neven Mimica, and Defence Minister Ante Kotromanovic.
Vucic is the highest ranking official in the incumbent government in Serbia to have visited Croatia since taking office in July last year.
