Prosecutors of the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) on Thursday submitted to the Zagreb County Court an amended indictment against six men accused of assassinating Croatian journalist Ivo Pukanic, which mentions for the first time Hrvoje and Novica Petrac as potential victims of a criminal group organised by Sreten Jocic on behalf of an unknown person.

In the original indictment filed a little under a year ago, USKOK accused the criminal group of killing Pukanic and planning to kill "two unidentified persons from the Zagreb area", whom the amended indictment identifies as the Petraces, father and son, both convicted for the kidnapping of the underage son of retired general Vladimir Zagorec, who was convicted for embezzling state funds.

Zagorec was mentioned in the trial for Pukanic's murder by defendant Robert Matanic, who named him as one of the persons who commissioned it, although he later claimed this was not true.

The indictment was also amended regarding the actual assassin, Zeljko Milovanovic. USKOK now claims that he activated by remote control the explosive device that killed Pukanic and his business associate Niko Franjic in downtown Zagreb in 2008.

The original indictment claimed that "one or more defendants" waited in Pukanic's immediate vicinity and activated the bomb on a moped parked near Pukanic's car.

The indictment charges the criminal group with organising Pukanic's murder so as to prevent them from writing in print and electronic media in Croatia and neighbouring countries about a number of criminal groups in the region and their ties.

The Zagreb County Court and the defence of the six accused are expected to take positions on the amended indictment on Monday.

Defendant Slobodan Djurovic finished his testimony on Thursday. He is charged with being the link between the assassins and Jocic, who paid EUR 1.5 million for Pukanic's murder.

Jocic, Milovanovic and Zoran Kuzmanovic are on trial for the same crime in Belgrade. The accused on trial in Zagreb are Djurovic and alleged members of the criminal group Robert Matanic, Luka Matanic, Amir Mafalani and Bojan Guduric.
