Croatia's anti-corruption office USKOK said on Monday that the chief executive of the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, Zsolt Hernadi, was still under investigation in Croatia even though Hungary had suspended its investigation of Hernadi for alleged bribery in the MOL-INA case.
The news that Hungary had suspended the investigation was carried by Hungarian and foreign media on Monday, citing Chief Prosecutor Imre Keresztes.
USKOK said it had not received a formal notification from Hungary's Supreme State Prosecutor's Office. It said such a decision was irrelevant to USKOK's investigation, adding that the Croatian prosecutors would be able to make their decision only after questioning the suspect.
Former Croatian prime minister Ivo Sanader is on trial in Zagreb for receiving a commission of 10 million euros from Hernadi in exchange for ensuring MOL a dominant position in the Croatian oil and gas company INA.
Hungarian prosecutors say they have found that the money was apparently transferred by two Cyprus-based companies belonging to a major Russian investor.
