Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor has said that the government accepted suggestions of social partners that the gradual equalisation of old age retirement of men and women should be carried out in the next 20 years.

"Yesterday we decided and proposed in the parliament that the draft amendments (to the pension insurance act) be discussed in two readings. In the second reading, which will be held soon, we will incorporate some modifications in accordance with our talks with trade unions," Kosor said at the government's meeting in Zagreb on Thursday.

At the start of its autumn session on Wednesday morning, the Croatian parliament decided that the government-sponsored draft amendments to the pension insurance law would not be discussed in fast-track procedure but in regular procedure with two parliamentary readings, following the government's latest motion.

Kosor said today that the starting factor for early retirement would also be related to the years of service of those applying for early retirement.

She said that the government and social partners agreed that an in-depth analysis of the entire pension system be done in six months' time in order to propose possible changes of the regulations in this field.
