Sixty-five rioters have been arrested of whom 52 remained in custody and 13 were released after Saturday's clash between the police and rampaging groups that attacked them in downtown Zagreb after leaving a peaceful veterans' protest rally in the main square, Zagreb police said on Sunday.

Thirty policemen were injured, of whom two seriously, as well as 18 protesters, police said adding also damaged were that two police vehicles, building facades, windows on shops, apartments and galleries, spokeswoman for Zagreb police Jelena Bikic told the press.

Bikic said that those arrested were young people of whom the youngest is only 15. She added that most of them are already known to police from incidents at sport events.

The spokeswoman said that among those arrested are members of Dinamo football club supporters, the so-called Bad Blue Boys.

She said said police used pepper spray to prevent the rioters from attacking them.

Asked to comment on claims that Opposition parties organised the rally, Bikic said she could not comment on that as police never established that.

Bikic recalled that some 15,000 people rallied in the main square on Saturday. She added that the protest was organised by the Association of War Veterans 1990-1996. She said police did not intervene during the protest which lasted between 1300 and 1510 hours.
