The Slovenian Parliament on Wednesday evening ousted the coalition government led by Prime Minister Janez Jansa, and appointed Alenka Bratusek as prime minister-designate in a 55-33 vote.

Bratusek the interim leader of Positive Slovenia (PS), the largest opposition party in parliament, was sworn in immediately. In her brief inaugural address, Bratusek vowed to focus efforts on restoring trust in the state, democracy and the rule of law. She also said that ratification of Croatia's Treaty of Accession with the European Union was Slovenia's strategic interest. "The ratification of Croatia's EU accession treaty is not only the issue of good neighbourly relations with Croatia, but it is also Slovenia's strategic interest."

Bratusek will now have 15 days to propose a cabinet to the National Parliament, a deadline that can be extended once at her request.

Bratusek, 43, would be the first female to lead Slovenia’s government since its secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Jansa’s government, which was elected a year ago, fell apart when three of the five parties in his ruling coalition quit the Cabinet after the state anti-graft watchdog accused the prime minister in January of corruption.

Earlier in the day, the National Parliament also elected Janko Veber as parliament speaker, paving the way for the legislature to have a new cabinet led by a new prime minister.

Elected in a 52-34 vote, Veber succeeds Gregor Virant, who stepped down as speaker in January after his Citizens' List left the coalition government headed Jansa.

Jansa and his cabinet will continue to perform caretaker duties until a new government is sworn in.
