Chief State Prosecutor Mladen Bajic on Friday welcomed the Interior Minister Rajko Ostojic's intentions to conduct an internal investigation in the ministry into the alleged secret surveillance of Bajic and eight journalists last year and said that the Chief State Prosecutor's Office (DORH) had not issued any orders to have journalists followed.
"I welcome the minister's decision to conduct an internal investigation in the ministry in this matter and after that I too will be a little wiser", Bajic told reporters in Valbandon, just outside the northern Adriatic town of Pula where he is attending a working meeting of Croatian county prosecutors.
He added that investigations conducted or ordered by the state prosecution and anti-corruption office did not encompass journalists.
Asked by journalists where he fitted into all this, he responded that he did not know and would hope to know more once the internal investigation was conducted.
"Anyone can be the subject of a criminal investigation including the chief state prosecutor, if of course, there is legal grounds for this and founded suspicion of criminal activities, unless they have immunity, and I don't", he said.
