Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic said in Belgrade on Tuesday Croatia had yet to take a position on Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic's nomination for the chairman of the UN General Assembly, adding that she would discuss this with him tonight.
"There are different speculations. We received this announcement two days ago. We were surprised... because it is the turn of this part of Europe to nominate a candidate and usually there has been a consensus about this, but at this moment Croatia has yet to take a position on the matter," Pusic told reporters at the Croatian Embassy in Belgrade.
She said the position had to be taken by June and that Croatia would do so.
Belgrade's Vecernje Novosti daily said today that Jeremic was Serbia's candidate for the chairman of the UN General Assembly and that Serbia officially submitted his nomination on Monday, but the Serbian Foreign Ministry would not comment.
According to the paper, it is Eastern Europe's turn to nominate the chair of the 67th General Assembly and the only other candidate is Lithuanian Ambassador to the UN, Dalia Leinarte. The chair can be elected by the countries of Eastern Europe agreeing on one name by acclamation, but if that is not the case and there are several candidates, the chair is elected by all 193 members of the General Assembly.
