Croatian Parliament speaker Boris Sprem dies

Croatian Parliament Speaker Boris, 57, died on early Sunday morning, Central European Time at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he was admitted on 23 August for the treatment of multiple myeloma, the national parliament said in a statement.

In June this year, Sprem underwent surgery in the Zagreb Clinical Centre after recurrence of multiple myeloma lesions. He went for the further treatment of this cancer of plasma cells to the USA on 23 August after his condition deteriorated and after all possibilities for his treatment in Croatia had been exhausted.

Sprem was born in the northern municipality of Koprivnicki Bregi on 14 April 1956. He had a degree in law and was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was elected the speaker of the seventh top national law-making body in 2011.

In the previous parliament, he was an MP of the SDP as well as president of the Zagreb City Assembly.

Sprem was an advisor and appointed official in parliament, vice president of the Zagreb City Assembly in 2000-01, chief of staff of the President's Office in 2005-2007. secretary-general of the Croatian Auto Club, chief of staff of the government's legislation office, and member of the Aurum insurance company's management.

Sprem used to be chairman of the parliamentary Defence Committee and a member of the Committee on the Constitution, Standing Orders and Political System, the Legislation Committee, and the Judiciary Committee.
