After nearing record highs in eastern Croatia, the Danube began to recede slowly on Sunday and only the easternmost town of Ilok could still expect a rise in the water levels later in the day, according to local authorities' reports.

The river reached 7.25 metres in Vukovar on Saturday, and on Sunday the level was down by two centimetres. The situation is under control, local authorities said.

In the last few days, the east of Croatia, where the Danube section is some 140 kilometres long, was braced for flooding with reinforced embankments to fend off the water from the Danube and its tributaries: the Drava in Osijek and the Vuka in Vukovar, after the deluge hit Central Europe.

The peak of the Danube flood wave is moving towards Serbia.
