Following a request from the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) branch in Split, the city's election commission has begun a review of election records and of about 1,800 invalid ballots after Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Ivo Baldasar defeated his HDZ rival Vjekoslav Ivanisevic with a slim majority of 615 votes in a mayoral runoff election on Sunday, commission chairman Ivan Botica told the press on Monday.

Botica said he expected the work to be done in the course of the day.

The leader of the HDZ's Split branch, Petar Skoric, announced late on Sunday that he would request a recount of ballots to see whether the election process was regular.
