An Osijek County Court investigating judge on Saturday set one month's detention for five people suspected by the USKOK anti-corruption office of a number of graft-related crimes at the Osijek Faculty of Economics.

Detention was set to prevent the suspects from tampering with witnesses or repeating the crimes, USKOK deputy head Zorka Fumic told reporters, adding that the other suspects questioned by USKOK on Friday would not be placed in custody.

USKOK today launched an investigation of 39 suspects on suspicion of abuse of office, taking and giving bribes, illegal intermediation, and incitement to abuse of office and illegal intermediation. The suspects include five professors, one assistant, 21 students, and intermediaries.

Five professors and one assistant at the Osijek Faculty of Economics are suspected of taking money and gifts in 2010-11 to give passing grades to the suspected students, in previous agreement with the go-betweens under suspicion.
