Germany will abide by what is written in Croatia's treaty of accession to the European Union despite speculation of possible amendments requesting monitoring as a pre-condition for Germany to ratify the treaty, the German foreign ministry in Berlin told the press on Friday.
The German government underscores that it will comply with the conditions set previously for Croatia's accession, according to a source from the German foreign ministry, following the allegations by German parliamentarian Gunther Krichbaum earlier on Friday that Germany planned to seek the imposition of a sort of post-accession monitoring as a condition to ratify the Croatia-EU treaty, which would envisage half-year reports on the situation in the judiciary and the fight against corruption.
Germany is very interested that all parties adhere to the provisions noted in the accession treaty and it does not contain any additional conditions for accession, nor any mention of subsequent monitoring after Croatia joins the Union. German diplomatic circles are convinced that no other options are relevant.
