The Croatian Association of Trade Unions (HUS) on Tuesday congratulated the coalition led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on winning the parliamentary election, stressing that the new government should immediately address numerous economic problems.

"I am confident that you are aware that due to the catastrophic state of the economy, the government will not have the usual time for adjustment, and will immediately have to grapple with many issues in need of solution, notably in the industrial sector which employs most of our members," HUS president Ozren Matijasevic said in a statement.

HUS also expects the new government to prove its credibility by revoking privileged pensions for government employees as well as by raising democratic standards and calling a referendum on making it easier for civic initiatives to call referendums in the future.

HUS also said it wanted the unions to be an equal social partner in joint efforts to build a just social framework in the interest of citizens.
