The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Tuesday confirmed that former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic is undergoing medical treatment, dismissing however reports by the media from the region that Mladic collapsed last week, after which he had to be resuscitated.
Some media carried reports that Mladic suffers from pneumonia. I can confirm that he is currently undergoing medical treatment, but I am unable to reveal the nature of that treatment, according to a statement issued by ICTY spokeswoman Nerma Jelacic. The spokeswoman also said in the statement that medial allegations that Mladic collapsed last week were entirely incorrect.
Mladic's attorney Milos Saljic told the Serbian news agency Tanjug on Monday that his client had been admitted to hospital with suspected pneumonia.
At a court appearance last week, Mladic complained that he was in poor health and suffering pain from a kidney stone.
Former Bosnian Serb Army commander Ratko Mladic is charged with genocide in Srebrenica, siege of Sarajevo and persecution of civilians. He was arrested in Serbia in May, nearly 16 years after he was first indicted by the U.N. court.
