European Union membership is in the interests of Croatia and its citizens because it will bring peace, stability, security and a stronger international position, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Gordan Jandrokovic, said at the main celebration of Europe Day in Zagreb's Cvjetni Trg square on Saturday.
"Croatia is entering the final stage of negotiations and we need to act in all directions to carry out all our tasks. We also need to take diplomatic action towards EU members and the European Commission," Jandrokovic briefly told the press covering the event.
He added that the information campaign should be stepped up substantially to ensure that the Croatian public was fully informed of what EU membership would bring to Croatia.
The celebration was part of activities marking the Europe Week, organised throughout the country for the 12th year in a row by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the European Union Delegation in Croatia.
Throughout this past week people have had an opportunity to better familiarise themselves with EU accession negotiations, the benefits of EU membership and other topics before the forthcoming referendum on EU membership.
A huge post box has been installed in the square where people can post their queries about the European Union and get their answers from the EU Delegation by post or email.
The celebration was attended by President Ivo Josipovic, who talked to citizens, but made no statement to the press. Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and the visiting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk were also there.
