Transport Minister Sinisa Hajdas Doncic has reiterated that the lease of state motorways for the purpose of monetising the public debt does not mean that they will be sold but that they will be put up for concession in order to reduce the public debt and make it manageable in the long run.
Asked by reporters on Friday what might happen in the event that motorways were not leased and state-run companies were not sold, Minister Hajdas Doncic admitted that "it will be difficult to control the public debt". He said that the privatisation of state companies, not considered to be of strategic importance, must be conducted swiftly in order to prevent such scenario.
He made it clear that the government did not want to privatise "water or forest resources" but the companies operating on the market such as Croatia Airlines and or the Croatian Railways Cargo (HZ Cargo).
It is our aim to preserve the public finances, Hajdas Doncic told reporters who were covering an event in which he and another two ministers were handing leaflets on measures against high temperatures at Lucko road toll station outside Zagreb.
