A fire which broke out in the Sisak oil refinery on Monday morning was contained and there was no longer any need for using air planes to extinguish the blaze, the Croatian National Protection and Rescue Directorate said on Monday afternoon.
The blaze broke out in the KP-6 segment of the plant at 1045 hrs today.
According to eye-witnesses, a thick 200-metre-high smoke with an unpleasant odour was belching from the plant.
According to the first information released by the INA oil company, there were no injuries in the accident which produced no effects on the environment.
The Protection and Rescue Directorate advised inhabitants in the houses in the vicinity of the plant to evacuate their homes.
The Croatian health ministry sent a toxicological team to check the situation on the ground.
Health Minister Darko Milinovic said that the situation was under control and that the public would be timely informed about the developments.
