Six young people lost their lives in a fire which erupted in a discotheque in Novi Sad, the capital of the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, at 2 a.m. Sunday, the Vojvodina broadcaster (RTV) reported on early Sunday morning.

The victims are three young men and three young women. When the fire broke out, there were some 300 visitors in the "Kontrast" discotheque.

The cause is still unknown but may have been due to electrical faults, according to Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic.

The six victims, who happened to be in the toilets when the fire broke out, died of inhalation of fumes.
