Boris Tadic, the leader of the Democratic Party who is running for Serbia's president for the second consecutive term, is slightly ahead of his main rival Tomislav Nikolic of the strongest opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS), according to an opinion poll conducted ahead of the general and presidential elections to be held on Sunday, the Belgrade "Danas" daily newspaper reported on Thursday.

The findings of the survey conducted by the Plum Mark pollster among 1,200 respondents from 26 to 29 April show that 14 in 100 respondents would vote for Tadic and 13 for Nikolic.

As many as 47 out of 100 respondents said they had not yet decided for whom to vote.

The third most favourable candidate is Ivica Dacic of the Socialist Party of Serbia who can hope to get 13 percent of the vote, according to the survey.

Cedomir Jovanovic of the Liberal Democratic Party can count on nine percent of the vote.

He is followed by Jadranka Seselj (7%), the wife of Serb Radical Party (SRS) leader Vojislav Seselj, who is standing trial before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

There are 12 candidates running for Serbia's president.

At the last presidential elections in early 2008, Nikolic mustered 40% of the vote and Tadic 35% in the first round. As the top two vote-getters, they competed in the run-off which Tadic won with 50.5% of the vote.
