The trade union federation MHS and the Croatian Trade Union Association (HUS) have decided to postpone the announced collection of signatures for "a referendum on referenda" due to weak public interest, saying that signatures would be collected between May 1 and 15.
The unionist will in the said period start collecting signatures for calling a referendum on relaxing conditions for future referenda, which is an initiative that would make it possible to call referenda in the future if so requested by 200,000 citizens, who would have to sign a petition to that effect within a period of one month. At the moment, a total of 450,000 signatures must be collected in 15 days to call a referendum.
The unionists were originally scheduled to start collecting signatures on 22 January, when Croatia will hold a referendum on its EU membership. This, however, was postponed as unionists failed to gather enough volunteers who would collect signatures at 1,000 locations.
