A group of 34 rioters who took part in last week's anti-government protest in central Zagreb have been detained for 30 days for fear that they might participate in further protests and interfere with witnesses, Zagreb County Court spokesman Kresimir Devcic said on Wednesday.
While being questioned by an investigating judge, the rioters expressed no regret and showed no remorse, and most of them have a police record of multiple violence-related offences, Devcic said.
The suspects were among a group of about 500 protesters who on February 26 attempted to break through a cordon of police officers barring access to St Mark's Square, the seat of the the government and parliament, where protests and public assemblies are banned under law. About 15 suspects three stones, bottles, bricks and other missiles at the police, injuring 26 police officers and damaging several police vehicles.
Attacking a police officer carries a prison sentence of between three months to three year.
