The Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, on Sunday celebrated mass at the Marian shrine in Marija Bistrica on the 279th pilgrimage of Zagreb residents to the shrine.

Bozanic said in his sermon, among other things, that one could feel in Croatian society for quite some time "attempts to limit in the name of secularity the expression of Christian faith in society".

He said "some feel qualified to determine in which occasions the Church should be present and in which it should not, what the faithful as members of society are allowed to do on the social front and what they are not. Artificial divisions are being created in attempts to impose one's ideology in the name of quasi-democracy".

The cardinal underlined that "it is well known what is meant by a state's secularity and what are the forms of relations between Church and state".

"That's why one should clearly say that there is nothing in society to which a believer can be indifferent. And anyone who would prevent a believer from testifying his faith would undermine his freedom and destroy the foundations of a healthy society."

Bozanic said that if someone wanted to stick to their ideology, they must not prevent others from testifying God. "In culture, the economy, politics, sports, a believer is always a believer. And as a believer he takes part in the life of the Church and, consequently, in society".

"We believe we have left behind the times in which such ideologists wanted to distance Croatians from the truth and take from them the unity of life in the Church," the cardinal said.
