Trade unions on Wednesday announced a protest rally for Thursday 11 October in St. Mark's Square and the main square in the centre of Zagreb to defend welfare rights and to oppose government austerity measures.
We are organising the rally to defend our welfare which the government is underhandedly trying to take away from us, to oppose economic policies that are shedding jobs, to oppose the deliberate reduction of the price of labour in the entire country, to oppose proven detrimental policies and severe austerity measures which mercilessly affect education and health care, union reps noted in a press release.
Three unions combined in education, science and healthcare are organising the rally in response to a decision by the government to revoke the Basic Collective Agreement (TKU) for the public service.
The TKU was revoked as trade unions did not approve of government amendments to the agreement which would reduce material rights but leave salaries intact. Trade unions of secondary teachers, tertiary education and nurses would not forgo holiday pay or Christmas bonuses, travel allowance and other material rights without government assurance that these would be reinstated once Croatia recovered from the current crisis.
The rally is set to start at 11 am at various points and head toward the main square, later making its way in front of Government House on St. Mark's Square.
Other union leaders said they would join the rally in a sign of support for the protest rally stating that the reduction of material rights and wages was just the "tip of the iceberg" of the government's austerity policies which has proven to be unsuccessful in Croatia and on a global level.
