Eight passengers died and over 40 were injured in a traffic accident when a bus crashed into a motorway barrier on the motorway Zagreb-Split at about 03.50 am Saturday, the local police reported on Saturday morning.

The causes of the accident in which the Zadar-bound Czech bus crashed into the central motorway barrier and tumbled into the opposite lane are still unknown.

One of the eight killed passengers was a seven-year-old child.

Forty four (44) injured persons were admitted to the hospital in the nearby town of Gospic after the crash, and later three of them who were in the worst condition were transferred to hospitals in Zagreb. Two of those transferred patients were children. None of the injured, who remained in Gospic, is in a critical condition, according to the local hospital sources.

The precise number of passengers on the Czech bus who were travelling to the Croatian coastal city of Zadar for summer holidays has not yet been provided to the media.

The accident caused delays and traffic stoppages on the Zagreb-Split motorway.
