Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini on Thursday called on Croatia and European institutions to redouble their efforts so that Croatia's EU entry talks could be completed by June and an Accession Treaty signed this autumn.
Croatia must redouble its negotiating efforts, but so must the European institutions, Frattini said in Sarajevo where he took part in a seminar organised by the European People's Party. The seminar, dedicated to the situation in the Balkans, the Middle East and northern Africa, was also attended Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Gordan Jandrokovic.
Frattini declined to comment on Croatia's Opposition calls for elections in Croatia, warning however, that the negotiations must end before summer holidays.
Otherwise we will enter a period of uncertainty which will be marked by enlargement fatigue in some EU member states, Frattini said adding that was his greatest worry when it came to the continuation to European integration processes.
Frattini said he was aware Croatia still had to close two very difficult negotiating policy chapters, expressing conviction Croatia can do it on time.
EPP president Wilfired Martens also expressed full support to bringing the region closer to the European Union.
