French volunteer Jean Michel Nicollier, who was killed by Serb paramilitaries at Ovcara, outside the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar, in 1991 has been awarded a Croatian medal posthumously.
The medal was presented to Nicolier's mother, Lyliane Fournier, by the head of Vukovar-Srijem County, Bozo Galic, in Vukovar on Thursday.
Nicollier was 25 when he was wounded in Vukovar on November 9, 1991. He was taken from the town hospital in one of the six buses with other wounded to the Ovcara farm and executed. It is still not known where he is buried.
"When he once called me on the phone he was happy to be in Vukovar because he thought that these people deserved his help," Fournier told reporters, adding that she was extremely proud of her son.
Nicollier's family are in Croatia for the first time and on Saturday they will be received by the Mayor of Vukovar, Zeljko Sabo.
