The gas consumption has increased over the recent days due to cold weather and very low temperatures throughout the country, and the main gas supplier, INA and its Prirodni Plin company, have reported that sufficient quantities of gas have been secured, adding that there is no reason for concern.

"With the temperatures being very low in the entire Croatia over the recent days, we also notice gas consumption increasing in comparison to the situation in early and mid-January. It should be stressed that there is enough gas and there are no reasons to be concerned about gas supply," INA said on Friday, adding that the company had made several steps to reinforce the security of gas supply to Croatian consumers.

One of those measures was the conclusion of a three-year contract with Italy's ENI on reliable and safe provision of gas from abroad.

Also gas production in the northern Adriatic sea has been intensified, and the PSP Okoli gas storage facilities are full with supplies.

The main gas distributers, such as the Gradska Plinara Zagreb gasworks with 270,000 end-users, also reported no problems on Friday.

The extremely cold weather raised the consumption of electricity, too, the Croatian Power Company (HEP) said adding that HEP capacity was sufficient for the current weather conditions.

Snowfalls and ice caused traffic disruption throughout Croatia, and schools were closed in southern Croatia due to inclement weather.
