Hungary's prosecution investigation authority has halted a probe into allegations of bribery in the partial takeover of the Croatian oil company INA by Hungary's MOL, it was said on Monday.

Imre Keresztes, head of the prosecution's investigation authority, said the information collected indicated that no criminal activity had taken place.

Last June, the Croatian state prosecutor, under an international legal assistance agreement, initiated an investigation into the chairman of MOL's board of directors and chief executive, Zsolt Hernadi.

Keresztes noted in a statement that the Croatian State Prosecutor's Office had accused two companies registered in Cyprus of bribing Croatia's then Prime Minister Ivo Sanader EUR 10 million in order to facilitate MOL's takeover of INA.

Hungary's prosecution investigators launched a probe on 14 July 2011 and found that the two Cypriot companies that had allegedly transferred the bribe were not in MOL's sphere of interest but belonged to a large Russian investor.

Hungary's prosecutor said the investigation clearly proved wrong claims by two Croatian citizens based on which Croatia had requested to interview Hernadi.
