The Initiative for the Defence of Croatian Vukovar on Friday forwarded an open letter to Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic saying that his recent public statements were inappropriate, socially harmful and provocative, adding that by making such claims Milanovic was insulting the dignity of all citizens who live and respect Croatia as their homeland.

"With his statements, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia insults not only the dignity of Vukovar war veterans and casualties, but also the dignity of the Homeland Defence War and all of its participants, as well as of all Croatian citizens who love and respect Croatia as their homeland," the letter said.

The Initiative did not specify which statements exactly it was referring to, but it stressed that although the war in Vukovar was formally over, a just peace founded on the truth and punishment for those who committed crimes was never achieved.

"But the prime minister does not or cannot understand and accept this. Because he does not empathise with the mothers who lost their children, he is not interested in women who lost their husbands or were raped, he has no sensibility for children who lost their parents. He does not want to receive veterans from the Initiative for talks. He did not take part in the war. The defence of the homeland was far from his sight and even further from his heart," the letter said.

The Initiative reiterated that setting up Latin and Cyrillic signs on state administration buildings in Vukovar was unconstitutional and illegal, adding that it had notified international institutions about that.
