‘Children need a family and I think that they would be more happy to live with two women or, if you will, with two gay men than to be in orphanages. The society needs to change and evolve rather than fall victims of the right-wing political mindset’, said Minister of Veterans Fred Matic in an interview with the Slobodna Dalmacija daily.
This is the first time that a SDP minister - and just when the process of drafting a new law that will regulate the rights of same-sex unions is about to start - clearly defines the most controversial issue when it comes to LGBT populations: should they have the right to adopt children or not.
'This is my opinion, not the position of the government, as the official position on this issue is not yet defined. I'm no expert, but as a responsible person I think we should provide the same level of human rights to all, especially to children. And, again, for a child, it is always better to grow up in a family', Matic added.
The Ministry of Public Administration, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and to the Ombudsperson for Gender Equality have received an official request to nominate experts for the working group for drafting the law, the Jutarnji List daily announced. It is expected that the draft will enter the Parliament procedure later this year.
