Four Serb men and a member of the EULEX mission in Kosovo sustained injuries in a clash which erupted between several hundred Albanians and Serbs in the city of Kosovska Mitrovica after the semifinal match between Turkey and Serbia in the basketball world championship on late Saturday night.
One of the locals was seriously wounded.
According to the Kosovo media, the incident happened when a group of Albanians gathered on the southern side of the bridge across the Ibar river dividing the city in the Albanian-populated southern and Serbian-populated northern part.
Celebrating Turkey's victory jubilant Albanians provoked Serbs who had watched the match in local cafe bars.
The two "sides" pelted each other with stones, and reportedly fire from automatic weapons was heard.
Kosovo police used tear-gas to disperse the crowd and the EULEX and NATO-led Kosovo Force blocked the bridge.
Police spokesman Besim Hoti said that local police and EULEX had managed to take control over the area in a few minutes' time.
According to Serbian media, there were injuries both among Albanians and Serbs.
Serbian official Oliver Ivanovic was quoted by the Serbian national broadcaster as saying that one Serb young man had gun wounds in his hand.
The situation defused during the night and traffic over the bridge was restored on Sunday morning.
