The executive president of the Dinamo football club, Zdravko Mamic, said on Sunday the president of the Hajduk football club, Hrvoje Males, had asked him and the leaders of the Association of First Division Football Clubs to do everything so that Hajduk, having lost all odds to win the championship, could win the Cup this year.
Males helped the authorities in an operation with led to Friday's arrest of the vice-president of the Croatian Football Federation (HNS), Zeljko Siric, and the chairman of the Referee Commission, Stjepan Djedovic, on suspicion of match fixing and bribe taking.
Guesting in the Croatian Television talk show "Nedjeljom u dva", Mamic said he would never do what Males did, adding that Males did it out of love for Hajduk but that, in doing so, he did no service either to the club or his own family.
"The state used him and he will have this unrest. Hajduk is now the target of bodies investigating the championship won in 2004-05 and the 2010 Cup and his family is being protected by six bodyguards. Hajduk is an institution much bigger than Males and lives forever," Mamic said, adding that he would be no "snitch" and that the institutions in charge should deal with corruption and crime.
Siric and Djedovic were recently relieved of their duties and reported to the HNS Disciplinary Commission. The Board dissolved the Referee Commission and undertook to appoint a new Commission chairman soon.
Speaking of the HNS assembly, due to convene on Tuesday, Mamic said it was an annual and not an election assembly, adding that he did not support Dario Simic's candidacy for HNS president.
"I hope Simic will never be president of the HNS. I think highly of him but I'll meet with him in private, so I won't divulge here some information that he won't like. He's not competent," said Mamic.
Commenting on the arrest of Siric and Djedovic, he said they were his friends but that the relevant bodies should investigate this case. "I was surprised to hear this about Siric. I'm on very good terms with Siric and Djedovic."
Mamic reacted heatedly when the talk show anchor said he was in conflict of interest because his son is a manager.
"I'm not in conflict of interest. I had a company, but I declare under full responsibility that my son, who has the licence of a FIFA agent, has never signed a deal with Dinamo," Mamic said.
He also said he was suing former Dinamo player Eduardo da Silva for breach of contract, as he wanted "only" the million euros he had invested in him.
Announcing the lawsuit a year ago, he said da Silva still owed him money. The footballer has filed a counter-suit, saying he did not speak Croatian well when he signed the contract and that he did not know what he was signing. He has described the contract as usurious, immoral and slave-like.
As a result of the lawsuit, da Silva's property in Croatia has been seized and his accounts frozen, as envisaged in the contract he signed with Mamic.
