European Union Commissioner Neven Mimica of Croatia said in Strasbourg on Wednesday that the Commission had not yet taken a stand on a recent letter from Croatian Justice Minister Orsat Miljenic in which he said that Croatia would change its law on the application of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) and that the amended law would go into force on July 15 next year.
"The Commission has received the position of the Croatian government, or rather the Minister of Justice, which explicitly states that amendments to the law will be prosed to enable the application of the European Arrest Warrant and that they will enter into force on July 15 next year," Mimica told the press.
He added that the Commission had not yet taken a stand on Croatia's position, that the matter was not included on the agenda of the college of commissioners and that it was being considered by relevant Commission services.
The Commission had said after receiving Miljenic's letter that it expected "swift and unconditional" amendment of the law.
Mimica said that the Croatian government had accepted the fact that the law could not remain in its present form and that it should be changed. He said that Miljenic's letter mentioned the time limit and that discussions were under way to see whether it was acceptable to the Commission.
