Serbia's President Tomislav Nikolic on Thursday assessed that the ICTY'S acquittal of former Kosovo premier Ramush Haradinaj could be a turning point when "all the Serbs should be released from the Hague-based tribunal".

Nikolic is hopeful that the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) verdict clearing Haradinaj of war crimes could unite Serbs because "injustice can raise the Serbian morale and not bring the Serbians down".

"I think that they didn't assess us Serbians well. So much injustice can only raise us, and not distress or disappoint us. We are a proud nation when faced with injustice and this may lead to new solidarity and peace between citizens of Serbia", said Nikolic in Kraljevo, commenting Haradinaj's acquittal on Thursday.

"This is a time when all Serbs should be able to leave The Hague tribunal because if Operation Storm was not a crime and if Haradinaj did not commit any crime, where then can they find any crime committed by any Serb official, army or police commander currently detained in the Hague tribunal", he added once again expressing doubt in the tribunal's impartiality.

"Now no-one will be able to doubt the truth about what Serbia has been claiming since the very founding of the Hague tribunal, that it is not a just court and that it is aimed at accusing Serbs as a nation and the Serbian state to permanently live in shame for some sort of crime", Nikolic continued.

He warned that the "(acquittal) verdict of the Croatian generals Gotovina and Markac and now Haradinaj will leave ineradicable repercussions on relations in the region".

"After all that has happened we cannot be supposed to keep up the relations we had with our neighbours until now. If someone wishes to bring dissension between us, then they have found the right was to do so", he said, recalling that the Hague verdicts have affected his idea of establishing peace in the region.

Nikolic also announced that Serbia's officials attending the UN Security Council on 5 December and later on 10 April 2013 at the UN General Assembly will have an opportunity to discuss the report on the ICTY and a debate on ad hoc criminal courts and "speak on behalf of their people and say what they think about the Hague tribunal, international justice and relations between nations".

As previously reported, Serbia will be represented at the UN Security Council meeting by Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, and Nikolic himself will attend the UN General Assembly in April.

The president of the UN General Assembly Vuk Jeremic, a former Serbian foreign minister, said that Serbia should not become despondent because of Haradinaj's release and that they should prepare themselves for the debate on the Hague tribunal scheduled for April.

"These days have been bad. We must not let our spirits fall. Let's get ready for 10 April 2013, a day of truth", Jeremic wrote on his Twitter profile.

Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik joined in criticism of the ICTY judgement acquitting three former Kosovo Liberation Army commanders: Haradinaj, Lahi Brahimaj and Idriz Balaj.
