President of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) Daniel Srb on Monday said that members of this non-parliamentary party would assemble at 9 p.m. in county centres to mark their opposition to Croatia's accession to the European Union by lighting white candles symbolising the loss of the country's sovereignty.

Speaking to a press conference in Osijek, Srb said that looking at the way Croatian politicians were behaving led to the conclusion that they had not learnt anything from the past

He added that now that the celebrations of Croatia's accession to the EU were over it was time to sober up and that the HSP would show its attitude to all this by lighting white candles as a sign of Croatia's capitulation and loss of sovereignty and its transfer to other bodies where the country would exist only symbolically and not be truly represented.

Police in the southern coastal town of Split reported that the ancient Peristil square had been shrouded in black on Monday morning but the shroud was taken down before police arrived.

"As soon as the police received the report, our officers were sent to the Peristil but they didn't find any trace of the black shroud which had obviously been taken down before their arrival", Split police station spokeswoman Ana Cepic told the press.

The protestors said that the shroud made of black plastic bags was a symbol of Croatia hopelessness on the political scene and the senseless selling of the Croatian homeland, its legacy and sovereignty, local media in Split reported.
