Over a thousand people gathered in Vukovar on Saturday to protest against dual-alphabet signs at public institutions in that eastern Croatian town.
The rally was organised by the Initiative for the Defence of Croatian Vukovar under the slogan "Slavonia with Its Heart for Vukovar".
This group of Cyrillic opponents started protest rallies on 2 September as soon as the placing of signs written in both the Latin and the Cyrillic script began in Vukovar.
According to the 2011 census, local Serbs account for slightly over one third of the population in Vukovar, which allows them to exercise certain rights such as signs written in the alphabet of their native language.
After today's rally in the centre of Vukovar, the protesters held a peace march through the town and stopped outside the police station to read out the names of people who this Initiative believes left Vukovar in 1998 upon the peaceful reintegration of this part of Croatia into the country's constitutional order and do not reside in Vukovar although they are cited in the latest census.
