The County Prosecutor's Office in Split posted on its website on Saturday a summary of actions taken regarding crimes committed in the Lora military prison in Split, saying a probe is under way in the Lora 3 case, as part of which an investigation has been launched on suspicion that a group of prisoners, members of the Niksic-Savnik group, were killed at the prison.
The prosecutor's office said it decided to post a summary in the wake of "frequent and/or incorrect reporting" about criminal proceedings that were held or are under way for war crimes committed at Lora.
The office said that as a result of the Lora 1 and Lora 2 cases, cooperation with the Montenegrin State Prosecutor's Office, and information from one non-governmental organisation, a criminal investigation had been requested as part of Lora 3 on suspicion that prisoners of the Niksic group were killed at the prison. According to the summary, they were brought to Lora to be mistreated.
The prosecutor's office said it was investigating all other possible criminal activities committed at the military prison.
During the 1991-95 Homeland War, captured Serbian and Montenegrin soldiers as well as civilians were detained at Lora.
The prosecutor's office said that in all Lora-related cases to date, it had cooperated with the Bosnian State Prosecutor's Office, the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor's Office, the Montenegrin State Prosecutor's Office, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.
The summary recalls that eight members of the military police were indicted at the Split County Court on 25 March 2002 and eventually acquitted in the Lora 1 case. Following an appeal by the County Prosecutor's Office, the Supreme Court quashed the acquittal and ordered a retrial, at the end of which, on 2 March 2006, the county court found the defendants guilty, sentencing them to prison for war crimes against civilians. The Supreme Court upheld the verdict on 6 February 2007.
Recalling the Lora 2 case, the summary says that an indictment was filed at the Split County Court on 23 December 2008 on suspicion that other crimes as well were committed at Lora.
On 27 September 2011, the court decided that two defendants, whose initials are T.D. and E.B., would be tried in their absence.
The media have said a number of times that the defendants in the Lora case were Tomislav Dujic, Tonci Vrkic, Miljenko Bajic, Josip Bikic, Davor Banic, Emilio Bungur, Ante Gudic and Andjelko Botic.
