Vesna Pusic of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), one of the parties comprising the Kukuriku coalition which won Sunday's parliamentary elections in Croatia, said in an interview with the Serbian news agency Tanjug published during the ban on electioneering in Croatia, that Croatia would not blackmail Serbia on its path to the European Union and that it would do everything to facilitate bilateral relations between Croatia and Serbia.

According to Pusic, this means that the issue of mutual genocide lawsuits before the International Court of Justice should, if possible, be resolved by agreement.

Pusic, whom the agency introduced as the most likely new foreign minister, said that if she was appointed foreign minister Serbia would be one of the priorities in Croatia's foreign policy. She stressed Croatia would advocate the position that EU enlargement should not end with Croatia's EU entry, adding that Croatia would help the countries of the region, including Serbia with its experience from the admission process. An active role in the regional policy will also be an opportunity for Croatia to gain a stronger political influence in the EU, Pusic told Tanjug.

"A country blackmailing another country cannot profit from it. You can halt someone for a while, push for a solution which seems acceptable to you, but in the end you lose a lot when it comes to your influence and your own political role in the region, so this most definitely will not be Croatia's policy," Pusic said.

Pusic told Croatian reporters on Monday that everyone felt the responsibility for the tasks ahead of the Kukuriku coalition.

Asked what the winning coalition planned to do first, Pusic said they must reach an agreement about forming the government and about the inaugural session of the parliament.

She stressed that they also must agree on decisions which must be adopted at the first parliamentary sitting, namely decision relating to a referendum on Croatia's EU entry, observers and future deputies in the European Parliament. She added that they also must start drawing up the budget.

The HNS issued a statement today thanking all citizens who voted for the Kukuriku coalition for their support.
