Salaries highest in pharmaceutical industry, IT sector

The best paid jobs in Croatia in 2010 are those in the pharmaceutical industry, with salaries in that sector being 37 percent higher than the average salary. Employees in the pharmaceutical industry are followed by IT professionals, whose salaries are 27 percent above the average, shows a survey on salary amounts conducted by the MojPosao job search portal.

The lowest salaries were reported for jobs related to sports and leisure, 16 percent below the average, and for jobs in agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing, 18 percent below the average salary.

The survey shows that since the beginning of the economic crisis in late 2008, the salaries of 45 percent of those polled have remained the same as before the crisis, while 40 percent have seen a salary cut. Only 4 percent of those polled have received a raise.

Engineers are the best paid profession in 2010, with salaries 21 percent above the average. They are followed by employees in the maritime and science sectors, whose salaries are 9 and 8 percent above the average respectively.

The least paid jobs in 2010 are those of social workers, special-education teachers and similar professions, and of workers in the retail sector. Their salaries are 45 and 56 percent below the average respectively.

The lowest salaries were reported in Krapina-Zagorje County (16% below the average) and Bjelovar-Bilogora County (15% below the average).

The highest salaries were reported in the City of Zagreb, 32 percent above the average. The City of Zagreb is followed by Zagreb County, with salaries exceeding the average salary by 20 percent.

Men have salaries that are an average 18 percent higher than women's, which is a decrease in relation to 2009, when men's salaries were 23 percent higher than women's.

Salaries in foreign-owned private companies are 22 percent higher than the average, and those in foreign institutions are 19 percent higher.

The lowest salaries were reported in nongovernmental organisations, 15 percent below the average.

Salaries in Croatian state institutions are almost the same as those in domestic private companies, while salaries in state-owned companies are three percent above the average.

As many as 34 percent of those polled said they rarely or never get a raise. One-fourth of the respondents said they get a raise once a year.

The survey on salary amounts covered 215 jobs and 21,000 respondents, the web portal said.
