The association "I love Croatia" on Monday pressed charges against an unidentified perpetrator for displaying the EU flag at state institutions and public places, claiming that this was not an official symbol of the Republic of Croatia and that displaying it was contrary to the law on the Croatian coat-of-arms, flag and national anthem.
The association said its move was prompted by the arrest of its member Dubravko Krcmarek, who was arrested for taking down the EU flag at a rally against the Hague tribunal's verdict against generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac in downtown Zagreb this past Saturday.
"We believe that the order (for displaying the EU flag) came from the government, namely former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, and it is not clear to us why the incumbent government has not done anything to remove it," the association's president, Roko Sikic, said.
The association asked that EU flags be removed from all state institutions and public places and that the person responsible for displaying them be fined, as well as that all persons arrested for taking down the EU flag on Saturday be released and that charges against them be dropped.
