Croatian Defence Minister Branko Vukelic on Wednesday called on parliamentary deputies to decide to send another 30 Croatian soldiers to the NATO-led peace mission ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) in Afghanistan, namely that in 2011 and 2012 a total of 350 members of the Croatian Armed Forces participate in the mission, with a possibility of rotation.
He stressed that 48 countries with 131,000 soldiers were participating in the ISAF mission, adding that the new NATO strategy for 2011 foresaw the beginning of the transfer of responsibility for security and stability to Afghan military and security forces.
NATO thus invited its member states, including Croatia, to send additional military troops and help train Afghan forces so that they would be able to take over responsibility for the security of their country.
Vukelic also briefed deputies of the current security situation in Afghanistan.
